Luckily for us, Nothing to Wear host Leigh Campbell and her guest, Leonie Barlow, explored exactly why this happens in the latest episode. And spoiler alert: it’s because your wardrobe needs an update.

On this week’s episode, the fashion expert talked about reinventing your wardrobe, and the six steps required to achieve long-lasting results.
Here’s what she had to say:
1. Find a muse.
“The easiest way to reinvent your wardrobe is to find your muse, and that could simply be jumping on Pinterest and finding looks you like. It’s not about plagiarising someone’s look, but rather using it as inspiration to create a sense of your style. Ask yourself, ‘Who do I want to look like? What do I want to dress like? Let’s start from scratch’.”
2. Deep dive into your wardrobe.
“We just don’t invest the time to really look at what we own before creating an outfit. So what I suggest is to take a deep dive into your wardrobe, look at what you own and marry them up to your mood board. I also suggest getting a rail and pulling out the pieces you love from your wardrobe and hanging it where you can see them.”
3. Explore the fit of the clothing.
“Once you’ve done a deep dive, take out all the clothing you like and put them in a separate pile, it’s almost like creating a capsule wardrobe. Make sure you feel comfortable in those pieces, they fit well, and put them aside because this is the first part of recreating the new you.”
4. Play dress up.
“We don’t invest time in creating outfits before it’s time to wear it. Put time aside when you’re in the mood, do your hair and makeup, and have a play around in your wardrobe. Put some music on and create some of those outfits that you pinned on your mood board.”
5. Photograph outfits.
“I recommend photographing outfits so you can remember how you styled them. I use my own Instagram for this purpose. It doesn’t even have to be a stylised photo — you can just lay the pieces on the bed just to remind you that it’s an outfit that works and is reliable and you feel good in it.”
6. Give yourself permission to be stylish.
“As women, we’re incredibly hard on ourselves. So this point is an important one: We need to give ourselves permission to look a certain way. You can wear anything you want as long as you feel good in it. When you look at your mood board, don’t think, ‘Oh that look is too young for me’ or ‘I don’t have the legs for that’, instead, if you like it, just wear it.”
